WHAT to EXPECT in LABOR: 3 Must Know Stages

WHAT to EXPECT in LABOR

Unsure what to expect in labor? This overview of the stages of labor goes into detail to help you navigate the progression of labor.

Let’s not overcomplicate this. It might seem confusing to start, but once you go over this a few times it’s much easier to understand.

WHAT to EXPECT in LABOR

There are three stages of labor:
1st stage – cervix dilates from 0cm – 10cm dilated
2nd stage – pushing and crowning occur and the baby is born
3rd stage – placenta is delivered

Within the first stage there are three phases:

1. Early / latent phase (0-3cm dilated) – infrequent contractions

2. Active phase (3-7cm dilated) – contractions become longer, stronger and closer together (2-3 contractions within 10 minutes)

3. Transition (7-10cm dilated)
This video gives you an overview as to what happens throughout the process of labor.
